AQUARIUM PLUMBING:
System Design and Operation

Frank has been keeping aquariums since he was 12 years old. During his youth, he maintained aquariums for family and friends, and enjoyed all aspects of aquarium fish and water maintenance. Presently, he keeps multiple aquarium, mostly populated with a variety of cichlid species.

By profession, Dr. Pyrtle is a practicing engineer and engineering educator. Since 2004, Dr. Pyrtle has been a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of South Florida in Tampa, FL. He is also a licensed Florida professional engineer. His areas of technical expertise include thermal, fluid, and energy storage systems. He teaches university courses and provides consulting services in those areas.

The intersection of his vocation and hobby results in application of his technical skills to design, build, analyze and improve aquarium plumbing systems and temperature controls. Though he thoroughly enjoys observing and caring for his fish, his passion is associated with the thermal and fluidic aspects of aquarium hardware.

Frank is a native of Houston, TX. He earned bachelors and masters degrees in mechanical engineering from Texas A&M University in College Station, TX and a doctoral degree in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, GA. He is a member of the Tampa Bay Aquarium Society.
